PC stopped due to “AA” MB error after POST process.
Hi everyone,
I’m facing some problems with my PC and would value your assistance. Here’s a summary of what’s happening:
The system starts up without issues but then freezes after the POST, either when booting into Windows 11 or Ubuntu—Windows gets stuck at the splash screen, and Ubuntu displays a black screen. The motherboard error code stays constant at "AA." It also freezes when attempting to boot from USB drives like a Windows Bootable stick or Hiren’s Boot USB. Both the mouse and keyboard stop responding. BIOS temperature and power supply readings look normal.
System Specs:
- CPU: AMD ThreadRipper 3970X
- Motherboard: Gigabyte TRX40 Designare Rev 1.0
- RAM: 256GB
- GPU: 2x RTX 3090
- PSU: Corsair AX1600i
I’ve tried replacing RAM modules one at a time, re-seating the GPUs, testing SSDs individually, updating the BIOS, clearing CMOS and resetting the BIOS, and checking the power supply. All these steps didn’t fix the problem. Do any of you have similar experiences or suggestions?
Thanks!
AA code indicates the system has moved into ACPI mode. The interrupt controller operates in APIC mode, meaning the system is functioning correctly and is preparing to enter the operating system (bios will transfer control). You can run memtest if needed. If not, consider reseating the CPU.
COLGeek and kerberos_20 confirmed the same problem after removing a GPU. The memtest showed no errors. I plan to re-seat the CPU.
Hi everyone,
I've carried out additional tests beyond the previous ones, yet the problem continues:
Performed a different PSU test, using just one RAM module and one GPU (Threadripper lacks an integrated GPU).
Replaced the CPU and checked the socket—no bent pins detected.
Removed all RAM and powered on; the motherboard showed code "10" without any beep, and the DRAM indicator was lit.
Scanned the system SSD—no issues identified.
Tried booting from USB devices (Windows 11 and Hiren’s Boot) once more; the system remains stuck at motherboard code "AA."
Attempted entering Ubuntu recovery mode, but it became unresponsive, keeping the motherboard code as "AA."
Are there any further tests you could suggest? I’m having trouble identifying the faulty component.
the linux window displays typical efi messages indicating secure boot or measured boot is active
so turn off/reset tpm and disable secureboot
this output appears in the uefi text console, which should now show on the gpu framebuffer console
implying a possible kernel driver conflict with your graphics card?
would you like me to try disabling uefi mode (enable csm and set storage to legacy)?
I have turned off Secure Boot and TPM, activated CSM, and configured storage as legacy only. The issue continues.
The problem isn't limited to Ubuntu; the device also failed to boot from USB, regardless of whether it's Ubuntu or Windows 11.
I'm just verifying if there are any solutions to this problem, since I'm still facing the issue.
