I recently moved my Ryzen 5800X from my original PC to a different system. I purchased the 5950X as a replacement, and it functioned adequately at first... somewhat. The machine started up without problems, and I attempted a performance test using FurMark to evaluate maximum temperatures with a new cooler. During operation, the PC unexpectedly powered off. Assuming it was an accident, I tried again... only for it to shut down while I was away. The power supply is rated at 850W; it’s more than sufficient for just a CPU test, given the circumstances... After some research online, I noticed others recommended enabling XMP settings when encountering similar issues. Another suggestion pointed out that the VRMs were overheating and causing shutdowns; however, before testing that theory, I activated XMP, launched Windows, and ran the benchmarks once more. Everything worked smoothly—both GPU and CPU tests completed without interruption, with temperatures staying around 90°C max. (The CPU only hit 90°C after roughly 20 minutes of full load, which is unlikely under normal conditions.) I stopped the tests and left the machine idle while I was away. Upon returning, it restarted, displayed the Windows login screen, and froze completely. The keyboard and mouse stopped responding. After a reboot, the PC would not boot any operating system. It briefly showed the Windows logo for three seconds before either fully rebooting or becoming stuck. I’ve tried various fixes without success: removed wireless and 10Gb NIC, updated/reflashed BIOS (B550 Aorus Elite from F10 to F15c), swapped RTX 3080 Ti with RX 570, changed RAM types and amounts, unplugged all NVMe/SATA drives, disabled AMD fTPM (since installation), re-seated the CPU and checked all connections—nothing appeared damaged or bent. (No troubleshooting yet.) Currently, it’s plugged into a power strip connected to a 1500VA UPS instead of a wall outlet. A few observations: the system appears to “double POST” when first powered; it seems the fans spin twice instead of once normally. I could linger in the BIOS for extended periods without freezing, but it freezes or reboots as soon as the OS attempts more complex tasks. I suspect this isn’t critical, though I’ve measured voltages—MB 5V around 5.1V, 12V roughly 12.3V—and confirmed the BIOS settings. Is there anything missing? Any other steps I should try? Replacing the motherboard is acceptable... but I’d rather avoid spending $600 on a component that might be the issue at hand.**

I understood the need to proceed, right after I shared the question. Sadly, I’ll have to attempt this again later, because it’s now 9:50 am and I’ve been up for a long time already.

I’ve checked the 5950X on various systems and sent the 5800X back to my PC. The results suggest it’s not reliable. It handles benchmarks and media conversion well, but under normal conditions it frequently freezes or restarts. This behavior hasn’t occurred with my 5800X on B550 or X570 boards, yet here it’s happening. I’m returning it now.
