I experience occasional unexpected restarts of my computer, often after brief power interruptions. My setup uses the same breaker panel, and I haven’t encountered any issues with that. I’m considering purchasing a UPS to ensure stability. When it powers back up, it fails to locate the boot device. If I wait a short time before trying again, it works properly. However, immediate reboots usually result in delays before it resumes.
After reviewing the event logs, only one entry appears—Windows indicating it wasn’t shut down correctly. The occurrences seem sporadic, sometimes weeks apart, but more frequent recently. Despite replacing components over the past few months, I still can’t pinpoint the cause.
I suspect the NVME drive might be the culprit, as no other parts have shown similar problems. I’m planning to test a 1TB Samsung 980 drive on my system and compare performance. I’ll also try running it on a spare motherboard processor to see if the issue persists.
Before deciding, I’m contemplating waiting a few weeks and then testing again, but I’m unsure how long to wait. My current specs are:
- NVME drive: 4TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (8 cores)
- Motherboard: Intel 990 PRO with B550 chipset
- Power supply: Black Pure Power 12MW, ATX, 80 Plus Gold

- RAM: M.2 2280, up to 7,450 MB/s
- Storage: GIGABYTE B550 UD AC, dual M.2 slots

I experienced comparable problems before. Each time it turned out the SSD had reached its end of life. At one point it would simply stop working and the computer wouldn’t start. Fortunately, it usually happened when the SSDs were still covered by warranty.
I inquired about the multimeter since I suspected the CMOS battery could be failing. I’ve noticed and felt similar problems on am4 boards when the battery stops working. Please consult Hard Disk Sentinel.
CMOS voltage measured at 3.151. Swapped the battery because another with that spec was available, though it came from the original box. The power-on delay exceeds 200 days; the hard drive arrived on 2/8/24.
