PC restarts following intense gaming sessions
Hello, my computer suddenly restarts right after launching demanding GPU games. If I play games with lower requirements or when not in use, it functions normally. This issue began recently. I’ve been able to play any game without problems, so it probably isn’t due to my setup. I upgraded my motherboard and CPU about two months ago, and everything was fine then. More likely, the problem lies with some hardware failing—possibly the power supply unit, which I’ve had for nearly five years.
I’m certain there’s no overheating issue. The event viewer displays a Kernel-Power Event ID:41 (70368744177664),(2).
I’ve tried several fixes:
- Running a "power test" with OCCT, which causes an immediate reboot.
- Reinstalling graphics drivers.
- Using sfc /scannow and DISM.exe in the command prompt, both indicating everything is okay.
- Uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates.
- Reseating all components and cables.
I don’t have any other GPUs or PSUs to test. If I can’t replicate this problem, it might be a PSU issue, especially since my GPU specs are:
Motherboard: ASRock B450M Steel Legend
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
PSU: Cooler Master G750M 750W
RAM: 8 GB
Thanks for your time.
Hey there,
Exactly what you said. Frequent restarts when loading usually suggest a problem with the power supply unit. If your current one is five years old, it might already be nearing the end of its life.
There are many high-quality gold units available at reasonable prices. You don't have to invest in a 650-watt PSU; a 550-watt one will work just as well for your project.
I had a comparable issue with my old laptop a couple of years back. it would function properly until suddenly it would restart or shut down. the issue seemed to be overheating. this could be a problem if your case is sealed (no mesh panels or ventilation holes). there might be a fault with your CPU cooler—does it make more noise before the system restarts, or does it not spin at all? you should also check your GPU fans. it could be related to a power supply problem, though i’m not sure because the cooler is from a top brand and has over 700 watts, which should be sufficient. however, the average lifespan of a PSU is around five years, so it might already be nearing the end. i’m not certain, but my first PC bought about 12 years ago still works fine with its original PSU—depends on usage.
I don't know how to respond to the thread, but it seems the PSU was faulty. I replaced it and everything is working now. I checked the power outlets and found an issue there, which might have been the cause, so please verify your power outlets too.
