PC Randomly shuts off
PC Randomly shuts off
I assembled a PC for a friend, performed stress tests, played some games, and shipped it. Everything functioned correctly during shipping via UPS. Upon arrival, the device operated normally, but after use, it would run for about 30 minutes before shutting down completely.
The troubleshooting actions I've shared with him so far include:
- Completed stress tests using timespy and Cinebench r24 (stress tests didn’t trigger a crash; peak CPU temperature reached 76°C)
- Verified that all CPU, motherboard, and GPU connections were securely fastened
- Confirmed the GPU was properly seated (he mentioned hearing the click when it was inserted, but this didn’t resolve the issue)
- Re-seated the RAM
- Disabled XMP profile (not tried yet)
- Turned off Windows Fast Start (not tried yet)
Hardware details:
CPU: 5800X3D
CPU cooler: Single fan be quiet (likely)
Motherboard: b550 phantom
RAM: 3200 DDR4 G Skill
Storage: 1TB M.2 SSD
GPU: 7800XT
Power supply: 750W Corsair semi-modular Gold (believed to be CZ75, brand new)
Chassis: Phanteks XT Pro Ultra
Operating system: Windows 11
Monitor: Monitor status unknown
This issue would have prompted me to immediately replace the PSU, but he doesn’t have one. I’m sorry for the inconvenience and trying to assist.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's important to provide complete system details. Please list your specifications in the following order:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
Include the age of the PSU along with its make and model. Also, mention the current BIOS version for your motherboard.
This issue would have prompted me to test a different PSU, but unfortunately he doesn’t have one. I’m sorry for this and trying to assist.
Ask your friend to try obtaining another well-built unit and power the system.
I'll check with him about borrowing any components, but first I need to understand the issue thoroughly. It seems he's unfamiliar with this process, so maybe it's not the power supply since it performs well under stress tests. What do you think?
It seems something may have slipped while being moved. Have your friend rearrange everything.
Update: For those facing this problem on a new PC with the AsRock B550 Phantom motherboard, I updated the BIOS to the latest version before sending it in, assuming it would work. I had him install the newest BIOS (beta versions, which are much newer) and the issue was resolved completely. It seemed quite unusual, and I wasn't sure if it was due to a faulty BIOS installation or an outdated version of the non-beta BIOS. No idea! But that's how we fixed it. Still don't know why I didn't encounter this problem during testing either. Who knows? Thanks guys!
