They'll need the RAM part number, BIOS settings, and confirmation it was in Qualified Volume Level.

Remove the 4GB RAM module. No board accepts mixed RAM kits. If you need them, use the slowest option in the first channel—this is the default setting. You might end up with the last working configuration in the second channel.

It only starts up using the second channel, leaving the 8GB slot empty.

Well, it seems like things aren’t going your way. Most boards only enable dual channel when both RAM sticks match in size and speed. Therefore, the memory setup you can use should be: either one RAM chip per channel, or two chips in one channel from the same package for XMP compatibility. Ideally, use similar timed and size chips, or four identical chips from a single kit. Some boards might support two different dual channels, but XMP won’t work then. Check the compatibility page for your motherboard to find supported kits.

The issue isn't that they fail to start, but that it occasionally launches and then fails to load any operating system without displaying a black screen.

they could perform better by choosing the lowest RAM speed and disabling auto-setting.
