PC power on and off in a one-second interval.
Uncle PC shared his experience with this setup. The system runs very basic tasks like browsing, office work, and AutoCAD. It was used roughly four days a week for about six years. Recently, it failed to power on properly—only showing power lights and shutting down immediately. After bringing it home, replacing the PSU and HDD resolved the issue. The hard drive started with a loud sound and then stopped after five seconds. He’s considering a replacement for the HDD and is open to advice on the PSU.
PSU: EVGA 500Watts model: 100-W1-0500 (One of those basic 80+ white)
How much older is the PSU in your setup?
He brought the PC home and after a brief inspection, the system was back online.
What replaced the PSU?
The unusual behavior is that the HDD starts with a loud high-pitched sound and then stops after five seconds. It’s reassuring to transfer data from it. It seems the old PSU could have damaged the HDD, as the WD drives from that time had reliability problems (at least for me or the drives I had access to). Curious, did you verify that the Intel RST is installed on the platform?

Backing up data from it is a positive step. It seems the old PSU could have damaged the HDD, as the WD drives from that time had reliability problems (at least for me or the drives I had access to).

Thank you for the update. Please note that the PC components we use in Argentina typically arrive several months after the international launch date. The PSU should ideally be at least 5/6 years old. I’m just using a random X branding for quick testing, and I’m considering purchasing a decent low-budget model for this PC—any suggestions? Should I look beyond the budget CX Corsair options? Yes, the Intel RST was installed during a full system reinstall about a year ago after a malware/virus incident.
It might come from RAM, so consider using just one RAM instead of two or three, and also test it with a multimeter—it could indicate an electrical short.
I am very unsure about this because, as I mentioned in my initial comment, altering the PSU resolved the problem.
Additionally, this motherboard only has two slots, and only one is utilized with the single 8GB drive.
These are lower quality components. If you don’t install a graphics card in this setup, they should still last beyond the warranty period. However, I wouldn’t use them with a mid-range or higher card. They work fine for office machines but aren’t suitable for gaming setups.
Thank you for the response!
And no, this PC isn't compatible with any discrete GPU, at least not as long as my uncle uses it.
He's a very active 75-year-old architect who doesn't enjoy or need video games.
Just office work, browsing, and light project CAD files.
Thanks!!!
