Hello, ever since I upgraded to an i5 13600k and a Gigabyte Z690 UD AX DDR4, my desktop seems to close things slowly and feels slowish in general. Game performance appears to be fine, it's really only on desktop related tasks. I noticed my processor can downclock as far as below 1.6GHz on the desktop and I feel like that's not normal, feel free to correct me though.

Ensure the power plan is set to high performance or verify it isn't in power saver mode.

I followed OP after reading the temperature discussion. It seems the situation is still active for you. The LGA1700 bracket from Intel might be the culprit, likely used for your CPU installation. There could also be a problem with the backplate it was attached to—insufficient firmness leading to deformation and further performance drops.

A quick summary: your CPU may not be making proper contact with the board, possibly triggering heat throttling. Nexus streamers posted several videos highlighting these problems and offering fixes, mainly recommending alternative CPU mounts from brands like thermalright or ThermalGrizzly, or some Chinese suppliers.

I think there’s a chance not all your cores are connected properly, even under extreme conditions, which could explain the slow performance. Since I’m not tech-savvy, I’d suggest checking individual core temperatures to verify if all expected cores are present and functioning. If they’re missing or not listed, it might point to a serious contact issue.

Even with full connectivity, performance could still suffer. Good luck!

P.S. I found a budget mount from thermalright under $10 that’s easier for beginners to install.

P.s. - historically games relied mainly on one main processor, while work tools and editing software use several cores. This difference might explain the smoother game performance compared to other apps. If that's right.
