PC malfunctions upon powering off, despite several component swaps.
Hi, my brother is dealing with a Windows 10 Desktop PC that had these components: MSI RTX 4060Ti, B550 Gamer Plus motherboard (previous was MSI B365M Mortar), AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 32GB GSKILL Ripjaw 3200MHz card, a 600W Smart Series WiFi card, a 1TB NVMe M.2 Samsung SSD. After putting it to sleep overnight with the old parts, it didn’t boot in the morning and showed no response or lights. We thought the power supply unit might be faulty, tested it with a paperclip and measured voltages, which all looked normal. The issue seemed to be with the motherboard or CPU. We replaced both with new parts, but it still didn’t work—no lights, no boot, PSU seemed fine. We’re considering swapping the PSU and need advice: can it truly show “power good” and proper voltages across all pins on the 24-pin connector? We’re confused and want a second opinion. Did you own a PSU tester? Yes, it can fail when power is drawn. With a 9700k, you've tried using just the power-display keyboard and mouse connected to the board?
We've been attempting to resolve the issue by connecting only the AC power cable and observing if the fan activates. Since we lack a PSU tester, we've relied on a multimeter to measure voltages. We've also tried several steps: replacing the power cable, shorting the reset SW jumper on the wall outlet, inspecting both motherboards for damage or burnt traces, removing RAM, GPU, and storage one by one, and checking for error codes during boot. Our main clue is that the PSU isn't delivering sufficient power for the system to start. It seems adequate for case fans but not enough for other components. We're ordering a new PSU today and will provide updates. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated!
The issue was resolved, but it turned out to be a user mistake. The original motherboard had defects, yet we accidentally misconnected the front panel jumpers on the new board. It was surprising that there were no motherboard lights indicating power when the PSU was turned on. Appreciate everyone's assistance!
