I recently assembled my first PC and everything seemed normal until I added the GPU. Once it started working fine with integrated graphics, performance dropped sharply once the GPU was installed. Under moderate loads, it crashes within minutes—often before any warning signs appear. When a game runs or I attempt to install software, the GPU may begin whining audibly, signaling an imminent crash in under 30 seconds. Even brief GPU activity can trigger this failure, regardless of load intensity. The crashes happen abruptly, without error messages or slowdowns, ending with a black screen and audio cutoff before the system restarts. Benchmarks and memory tests work perfectly without GPU, but fail when it’s installed. My hardware specs include a Ryzen 5 7600, Sapphire RX 7800 XT, and other components. I’ve tried diagnostics, reinstalls, driver updates, BIOS tweaks, and even changed power settings, yet the issue persists. The PSU draws excessive current during testing, and temperatures remain normal. I’ve had to physically adjust RAM, GPU, and PSU connections, but the problem continues. Given my location, getting a repair is difficult. Do I need a replacement PSU? Or is the GPU defective? Any guidance would be invaluable—I’m just starting out and this machine is essentially useless beyond basic browsing.

The GPU might be damaged, but it’s not impossible. Sometimes they arrive from the factory with issues. If you recently purchased this GPU, returning it could give you a fresh one. Otherwise, the PSU could be the problem—perhaps it’s not delivering enough power to the GPU. Try swapping it out to check if the issue resolves.

Thanks for the guidance. The new PSU didn’t fix the issue, so you’re likely correct. I’ll take on the challenge and explore the defective exchange option. I wasn’t certain about the extended warranty, but I’m really grateful I did this now!

No, I didn't change the PCI slot or update the BIOS.

I didn’t switch to another PCIe port because the other one wasn’t in the right spot for the card, but now that you say it, I might try moving it when I can. I updated the BIOS, but it didn’t help. Updated: I found a different slot and it’s working perfectly! Thanks a lot! It’s a bit disappointing the quicker port didn’t fit, but I’ll sort it out later. At least I have a functional computer now! — Edited March 27, 2025 by sevenstars
