PC keeps turning off on its own, no matter what I fix with different parts!
It's probably not about the main electricity coming from the wall, but maybe your graphics card (GPU) or the board that connects everything together.
But why would a computer turn off just by sitting there? Plus, someone else got this exact problem on an old computer that wasn't even like the one we're talking about.
Thank you so much! I feel better knowing it wasn't costing more than I thought. Oh wait, this guy mentioned something I missed and forgot about. If electricity were the problem, why couldn't I force a power cut through specific switches? That doesn't make sense to me. I looked at random shutdown stories online and saw people with similar symptoms who got their problems solved by buying a new motherboard or a new graphics card. On my part, it only happened less than 10 times over 1.5 years compared to the 40+ times I've had this happen in the past year on my current setup. The old computer was really bad and poor cooling is probably why those shutdowns were happening sometimes. Anyway, I thought a power supply unit would fix my shutdown issues but now I'm not sure if that's going to help.
Since your computer keeps shutting down for different reasons, it's hard to know which one is the real problem. It could be that there are actually several problems at once that all lead to the same result: a crash. When it comes to power components, replacing just the main processor (MoBo) might help reduce these crashes or even stop some of them that you can repeat. But if your computer keeps turning off when it's not doing anything, that could be because the city's power lines aren't steady enough. I haven't heard about graphics cards causing this shutdown issue, except maybe because they are too hot or their power supply unit (PSU) isn't strong enough to handle how much power the card is using right now, especially when there are sudden spikes in electricity. Sometimes one time your GPU gets too hot and crashes, but another time it's just a bad or weak power supply. Still, having an extra battery backup like a UPS is really good for safety and can protect you from whatever dangers come from the main grid. It's worth buying a good backup.
This might just work! I ran the PC for a couple hours at my friend's place and it stopped those random power cuts. That was mostly true for two hours, which is better than usual since I've seen many times before. But it didn't stop the shutdowns when certain games started running. So now I'm probably going to get that UPS you told me about, and maybe replace my motherboard later in the future. Is this a good idea? I feel pretty happy as long as those random power cuts stop happening for me.
Yes, the UPS works fine. I'm not sure about the Mobo yet, but if you can find a third one that's known to work and has good power supply, go ahead of course. That way we can be 100% sure it wasn't just the PSU causing the problem. Since when PC shuts down when doing heavy things like gaming, 90% of the time is because of the power supply. You could also try swapping in a second GPU and see if the shutdowns during load go away too. Mobo VRMs being an issue is actually pretty rare now. Also, replacing a mobo is a tedious job that takes a lot of time. But after we've tried everything else with no luck, it basically comes down to the mobo.
You might look at buying a 1000 Watt PSU for your PC because it helps you add things later on and gives you enough power to do everything without problems. A power supply is very important when building a system and needs to handle all the total power you will need from the whole setup. So that you can enjoy playing games instead of worrying about fixing things or spending too much time with bugs. It's just a tip from a veteran gamer who builds PCs. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
