I think the present scattered situation in PC gaming is damaging the industry overall. The main reason people opt for services like uPlay is because Ubisoft chose to release all their titles exclusively there. If every game were accessible across all platforms—Steam, Origin, GOG Galaxy, uPlay—I’d see decisions about which service to use based purely on quality, pricing, refund rules, support, and DRM status. In my view, this could lessen Steam’s dominance and spark real competition. It would also grant customers more freedom than they often experience now. Of course, this depends on developers deciding which platforms they wish to support. What are your thoughts? What challenges might arise from this idea?
certain services have guidelines that prevent a title from being released on more than one platform, such as X, Y, or Z. this forces creators to pick just one because each service has its own terms. it seems the responsibility lies with the platforms and how they handle developer agreements. if all platforms followed consistent rules, developers would likely be more willing to release games across multiple services.
userbase segmentation across platforms faces distribution issues that are often challenging in games with multiplayer capabilities
We don't rely on games anymore. Steam is fine, what's the point? The other options are terrible.
Steam holds the exclusive position, while GoG remains in its rightful place. Your download is linked to an account, but your actual gameplay isn't tied to it. Purchase the game, save the installer on your storage, and install it across all devices whenever convenient. If you lose your account, you still retain access to the purchased game. Friends who wish to test it should install it themselves. If your system lacks sufficient space, store the installer on a traditional disk—no need for activation codes or special activation methods. For a Steam-style experience to view and download multiple games, use the client.
This individual would prefer GOG Galaxy since they dislike DRM restrictions and want their games to remain free from account requirements. Unless they focus solely on The Witcher 3, they wouldn’t be able to enjoy it.
