PC gaming earnings exceed console sales figures.
And some gaming enthusiasts claim we’re stealing games, but analysts say the PC market now leads in earnings. David Cole from DFC Intelligence shared with PCR that globally, PC gaming has overtaken console sales, though new consoles are expected to boost console numbers. He noted strong overlap between core gamers on PC and console platforms, with consoles now seen as a luxury and PCs as essential. Previously, DFC predicted PC gaming would surpass consoles by 2015 and projected a $25 billion market by 2014. The latest quarterly report highlighted that MOBA and free-to-play games remain top performers, with League of Legends and Dota 2 leading usage. Cole pointed out that MOBA titles dominate usage, while the mix includes MMOs, strategy games, and shooters. He mentioned that 2013 saw few new releases, but 2014 brought fresh titles like DayZ and Rust. Europe has driven PC trends, especially free-to-play, and the US is likely to see more AAA releases. Cole also foresees more crossover between platforms, noting the growing difficulty in distinguishing PCs from mobile devices.
Perhaps businesses will begin prioritizing PC ports in the future.
