I usually purchase games from Steam and never own a physical disc. What’s the process? Because it isn’t Steam, how can I connect with friends or play? And does the game run directly on your PC or must you load it from the disk?

Today's disc games usually include a Steam key, you just put the disc in and install the files, Steam will check for updates whenever possible and that's it.

You place the game on the disc and follow the instructions inside the package. Alternatively, you can employ the provided code to start the download without needing the physical disc.

Feeling a bit worn out now. Just put the disc in, install it, and play. That was how we did it before.

It compels you to get Steam, after which the game is installed. It then prompts you to insert the disc to confirm the setup. This process happened with my wife when she received it. The twist was it needed an ADSL2+ connection with an 8mbps speed.

They function today mainly through retail installers, offering limited utility beyond that. Occasionally it's useful if your connection is unreliable or more affordable this way. Previously, they included DRM along with the installer. You had to insert a disc to run them. For multiplayer, you joined servers using names or IP addresses, or set up your own.
