PC frequently powers down during games, now faces issues starting up
Hi everyone,
I'm facing a really annoying problem where my PC frequently powers off while I'm gaming. The screen turns black, the fans crank up to maximum, and the system becomes completely unresponsive. It's been happening for some time now and seems to be increasing in frequency.
Recently, the situation has worsened. At times the computer won't turn on at all after a shutdown. When I press the power button, the motherboard's RAM indicator lights up first, then the CPU light appears, and eventually the system manages to boot after a few minutes.
Here are my current details:
Operating System: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RAM: 32.0GB Single-Channel Unknown @ 2998MHz (currently single channel due to testing)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS (AM5)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
Storage: Samsung SSD 980 PRO 2TB
I've tried several troubleshooting steps:
- Checked temperatures, they're within normal range.
- Reseated all power cables and used a different outlet and power strip.
- Ran the system with just one RAM stick, which temporarily resolved the issue but reappeared later.
- Swapped RAM sticks between slots without fixing the problem.
The lights during boot suggest a possible motherboard or RAM fault, though I'm still unsure. The complete shutdown followed by boot struggles indicates a more serious underlying issue.
Anyone else had a similar experience? Do you have any suggestions on what else to check? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

BIOS Ver: 2214 (from early 20024, no problems until recently)
EDIT: PSU is Corsair RM850e V2, purchased in early 2024
Have you experienced any power interruptions recently, such as a complete outage? Has anything physically damaged the PC, like an accidental impact or hit? Are there any components that have been overclocked, including the RAM? Have you considered using a spare RAM kit if available? You might also want to attempt a BIOS reset to see its impact.
What method are you using to cool the processor? What is the make and model of your case?
