PC Freezing
PC Freezing
Hey everyone. I'm facing a recurring issue with my custom setup (and honestly, I don't think anyone can pinpoint the exact cause). It's not my usual rig for software work—just a personal project. Here are the details:
- Motherboard: ROG Crosshair VIII Formula
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (16C/32T, 72MB cache) – max boost up to 4.9GHz
- Graphics: MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Ventus 3X (12G OC) – NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti
- PSU: ASUS ROG Thor 1200W Platinum II – PCIe 5.0, OLED, 0dB cooling
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 4000MHz C19 XMP 2.0 (4x 32GB)
- OS: Ubuntu 23.04 (started in 22.04; hoped 23.04 would help)
What I've observed is that after leaving the PC for a few minutes (sometimes 1 to 5 minutes), it freezes and requires a reboot, especially when booting into Ubuntu. I have a few screenshots of the reboot phase if you need more context.
Any advice, suggestions, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Regards from Austria.
Hey there. Thanks for reaching out. I've put in a lot of effort to be clear. - I removed all four RAM modules and replaced them with two 16GB sticks just to check if the issue was hardware-related (no problem). - I noticed one CPU cable wasn't fully connected... - The CPU was taken out, cleaned, and reattached to confirm it wasn't overheating—OS was reinstalled on NVMe and SSD to rule out disk issues (still no issue). - The graphics card was swapped out too, but that didn’t help either. - I ran a CMOS reset (will repeat when freezing) and changed most BIOS settings. Now everything is back to normal on Auto mode. Also, I missed recording that power draw drops to 80W during freezes—maybe a safety switch activates to cut power. I set up the X1 Extreme for backup with Ubuntu, but it doesn’t work well with the Lenovo Workstation Dock and only shows the laptop screen. Bye.
During tests, I used a different CPU and then swapped it onto another board. I'm completely confused...
Thank you for your assistance. I'll try it out this weekend and let you know the results. Cheers.
Hello, I wanted to mention switching the CPU—thank you so much to my daughter for lending hers. I’ll send mine to the seller to check what options are available. I’m hoping they’ll send a replacement. Your support means a lot, and it gives me the confidence to thoroughly inspect everything and pinpoint the issue.
