I recently upgraded my GPU from a 1660 Super to a 7900XT after finding a good deal on Facebook Marketplace. It sometimes performs well during gameplay, especially when graphics are demanding, but it tends to be unstable. The screen freezes briefly, followed by silence. Restarting the PC is the only way to resume use. I decided to lower the GPU clock speed, which helped temporarily but freezing still occurs occasionally. I suspect the problem lies with my motherboard rather than cooling, since temperatures remained normal on another monitor during the crash. I’m not sure if the power supply is the issue, as my 850W PSU has no signs of overheating. Thanks for any advice!

Specs: Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB DDR4 RAM, RX 7900XT, B450M-A II, Windows OS.

Did you check the drivers after switching from Nvidia to AMD? I’d have reinstalled Windows myself. The graphics card is essential for gaming, so I wouldn’t trust anything less than a complete reset. I upgraded from a 6900XT to a 7900XTX and even reinstalled it.

You definitely had to understand the new concepts because of the switch to AMD (or the other way around). Just removing things doesn’t fix everything and often leads to conflicts.

I finally gave it a shot and it didn't work. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the feedback.

Since down clocking seems to help the situation my guess is temperature. Probably the GPU's hotspot temperature (readable in GPU-Z / HWINFO64) is getting too high and thus shutting down the card. These 7900's seem to suffer a lot from hotspot temperature issues. Run either GPU-Z or HWINFO64 on a second screen while gaming (without under clocking) and keep an eye on the GPU hotspot temperature. If it goes above 100c there's a problem there.
