PC fans go crazy and computer shuts down. When turned back on, screen is black and I can’t access anything ?
I was playing a video game with friends when the fan speed rose sharply and the screen went black. I panicked and turned off the computer, but it started again. Now, when I powered it back on, the screen was completely dark, showing multicolored dots near the top left corner. This isn’t a monitor issue—it works fine otherwise. I’m trying to figure out what might be wrong and how to test each possible cause.
Reason - hardware malfunction.
Verification - varies.
It relies on your familiarity with PC components and your ability to replace individual elements. If you're unsure, take your computer to a repair service for testing and repairs. However, if you have some knowledge, we can begin more simply:
Complete system details, particularly the PSU model and manufacturer (or part number) are? Additionally, what is the age of the PSU, and was it purchased new or used/refurbished?
Sorry for the delay in providing that info! I didn’t have it readily available. Here’s the full hardware list.
Power Supply – Apevia ATNG 800 watt, 80+ gold
Mainboard – ASUS Prime z390-PATX
Graphics Card – Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080
Processor – Intel core I7-9700k
Storage – Intel 660p M.2 2280
Memory – Crucial Ballistix 3000 MHz DDR$ DRAM, 16 GB
Thanks for informing me! The specs have been updated to the post.
Holy hell....
..sigh...
So, you chose premium parts but why did you skimp on the PSU?
🙄
You probably don’t get it—PSU is the most crucial part inside a PC. It’s way more vital than your CPU or graphics card, because it supplies power to everything.
Anyway, you still have one last step before it’s time to close:
remove your GPU from the case completely and connect your monitor to MoBo. Check if you can capture an image.
If you manage to do that, congratulations—your GPU is ruined and you might need a new PSU.
If not, you could assume everything connected to that power supply is dead, which means your entire system.
This is exactly why you should never cut corners on the PSU.
Also, don’t say you lacked funds for a good PSU just because you didn’t have enough cash. If you can afford an RTX 2080, you can afford a quality PSU too—like Seasonic PRIME or Corsair AXi.
Thank you for the guidance. I will adhere to this advice, check how the remaining parts function, and update the PSU.
So I removed the GPU and connected the monitor to the motherboard, and the PC started working properly—great news. To check further, I reinstalled the GPU, but it didn’t fail completely (I played some games briefly to test), though my FPS was low and memory usage was very high. I’m guessing this is due to what the PSU did to the graphics card, but if you think there’s another reason, let me know!
I’ll follow your advice and get a new PSU. Thanks a lot for your help!
