PC fails to post with Ryzen 7 5800X3d
Experiencing a nightmare
My old motherboard failed, so I had to replace it.
I received an MSI Mag Tomahawk B550.
My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which meant the system wouldn't boot without it. I installed an older CPU, got the system running in Windows, and applied the latest BIOS on the motherboard.
Swapping the CPU still didn’t work, the GPU fans ran at maximum speed but no visual output appeared.
The motherboard claims support for the 5800X3D in one of the BIOS updates, but I ignored that update and simply upgraded to the newest version. Did this also remove the support feature, or should it have been included in the latest release?
I’m wondering if rolling back to a specific update would restore compatibility with the 5800X3D.
Also worth mentioning, there was an excessive amount of thermal paste applied—some remained in the socket but didn’t appear to impact the older CPU. However, my 5800X3D has some paste on its pins. I should carefully remove it using isopropyl alcohol before attempting another try.
Following the cleaning of the pins on the 5800x3d reset bios defaults (clear CMOS) via the jumper instructions on page 25 of the manual, the latest BIOS version now includes enhanced support for the CPU. There is no longer a requirement to revert to an older version.
Don't have a jumper cap, but it's running the 2700 now. Can I simply load default settings from the BIOS screen before swapping the CPU back? Or should I remove the battery to reset the CMOS?
It's possible the 5800x3d failed along with the previous board.
