PC fails to boot following the activation of XMP settings.
Mobo: Gigabyte Aorus z390 PRO BIOS v9 CPU, Intel Core i7 9700K, RAM Patriot 16GB 3200MHz Viper 4 CL16 (2x8GB).
I attempted to activate XMP profile 1 to push memory speed from 2133MHz to the advertised 3200MHz. After saving and exiting BIOS, I encountered a black screen and multiple restarts without any warnings. Once the PC started normally, BIOS reset factory settings—speed dropped back to 2133MHz and XMP disabled.
Do you have any suggestions on how to resolve this? Also, can I test if the system boots correctly at a lower speed, such as 2666MHz (possibly the highest non-OC setting for this CPU)? Should I just enable XMP, set frequency to 2666MHz, keep timings and voltage unchanged (16-18-18-36 and 1.35V), or try something else?
Reduce the speed for better performance. Most systems have predefined settings for slower speeds. The task manager can provide information on your memory usage and speed. Consider using HWInfo for more details.
In fact, there is only one profile named XMP Profile 1 which sets the frequency to 3200 MHz. I can adjust the frequency to any value available in the world through Advanced Memory Settings, but it doesn't match a specific XMP profile for that speed. It seems I might be missing something?
Reset the CMOS using a jumper or the battery as per your motherboard instructions, then adjust Vcore to around 1.2V and Vccsa to about 1.25V. Apply XMP settings. The 9700K + Z390 should handle memory speeds over 4000 MHz easily, not just 3200 MHz. If that doesn’t work, the memory might be faulty. Try booting with a single stick first, then swap it with another to test at the rated 3200 MHz.
You've recently tried enabling the XMP Profile again, and the system is now booting correctly with the right frequency settings. It seems your RAM and motherboard might have been acting strangely yesterday. Switching to Advanced Memory Settings instead of Easy Mode didn't change much. If you're experiencing a BSOD while playing Dying Light at 3200 MHz, it could be due to instability at that speed. You may want to check the system logs or try lowering the frequency temporarily to see if the issue persists.
