I faced a problem where my PC would only boot up with the CPU on. After basic checks, I swapped my Ryzen 5 5600 for the older Ryzen 5 1600. The new system worked, so I returned the new CPU for warranty. However, the issue continued. Later, I tested parts from a friend’s PC and found it booted fine with his RAM, while mine also worked with his. Despite matching RAM speeds, latency, and motherboard, the CPU difference seemed to matter. I’m still puzzled about this situation.

I should note that identical settings don’t guarantee identical RAM performance, as kits like 3200 CL16 can vary significantly between units. I suspect this is why his setup functions in your system while yours doesn’t. As for why it worked before things failed, I have no real explanation—this section lacks a concrete reason. The only possibilities I can think of are a BIOS glitch or corruption; updating the BIOS might help, but that’s the only idea I have.

I've encountered this situation before, and the best approach is to remove all the RAM and install a matching replacement, similar to what you did when swapping with your friend. Their unit could be compatible. It's possible your system uses XMP/DOCP without enabling it, which might cause issues. With four sticks, XMP may not function properly, even if they're compatible. RAM can degrade over time and fail, but in such cases it usually stops working before the OS boots up, often triggering a crash before the desktop appears.

Can the system start with just one DIMM? Yes. Add a single DIMM, apply XMP to verify it works, set primary and secondary timings manually, keep tertiary auto, turn off MCR so it retrain it. Test again. If successful, add a second DIMM and check dual-channel training. If not, manually set 900mV VDDP and retry. As @RONOTHAN noted, identical kits from the same maker can differ in chip design from various vendors. Our lab has received thousands of SKILL kits over time—essentially a lottery. Even with multiple Hynix units, some are CJR, DJR, AFR, MFR, etc., each with unique behavior.
