Hello! Your i5-9600k is a great upgrade over the i5-6600k. After setting it up on your MSI Z170A SLI board with an h100i v2 and two RAM sticks, the boot process still works when you reinstall the older chip. At first, I thought the problem might be with the socket, the motherboard BIOS, or even the chip itself. While installing the new processor, I noticed a thin layer of thermal paste along the edge of the socket. I cleaned it as much as possible, but removing most of it without bending the pins proved difficult. After checking carefully, I didn’t find any bent pins. I’m also unsure if the type of thermal paste you’re using—Corsair zinc oxide—is compatible with your 6600k versus the 9600k. I’m not sure if slight differences in pin layouts could affect compatibility. Right now I’m out and trying to capture photos or a short video of the boot failure for further help. The Z170 and Z270 boards don’t support a 9th generation CPU unless you install custom firmware or BIOS updates.
Previously noted, Intel 100 and 200 models aren't compatible with 8th and 9th generation CPUs. You'll need a 300 series board—Z370 or Z390 works best for unlocked K-CPUs. The socket type remains LGA 1151, but there are two versions. Version 1 covers the 100 and 200 series, while Version 2 applies to the 300 series. Pin layout has changed; some pins have been relocated or reconnected, and unused pins are now active.
Ack! You're correct—I'm sorry about the error, but at least I avoided damaging anything. I'm planning to install a Z390 motherboard; upgrading is definitely coming up soon. Thanks for your assistance!
