I brought the RTX 3060 Galax 12 GB three years ago. Recently, while streaming on YouTube, my PC stopped working and gave off a smoke smell. After unplugging it and checking, it didn’t start again. Once I swapped in the 1030GT, it worked fine. But when I reinserted the 3060, it only lit briefly before cutting off. It seems the GPU isn’t powering on properly. Could be a PSU problem despite being 80 Plus certified? I’m not worried about buying another GPU but want to ensure my PSU can handle the new card without issues.

This appears to be a PSU issue. The Antec VP Plus is listed on the Tier:E avoidance list. It’s not a reliable power supply, so you shouldn’t keep using it. Halt any additional testing immediately and replace it with a new power supply before connecting your GPU. Your current PSU isn’t safe for use with the new graphics card.

No visible signs of harm appear on the 3060. There is no burning odor detected.

The odor is strong on one side, but that’s essentially all.

Yes, you can purchase a 650W power supply similar to MSI MAG.

It seems there might be a faulty part on the board, which is triggering a short circuit in the power supply or motherboard. This issue, along with mismatched GPUs, suggests your 3060 is likely damaged.

You likely can tell where the issue originated. If the GPU doesn’t emit a strong odor, it’s possible the PSU only replaced a single component, leaving unstable power for the GPU.

Absolutely, you should definitely upgrade to a new power supply unit. The current one is obviously risky. If it doesn’t resolve the problem, I’m in agreement with Needful about switching to a better GPU.
