PC Build Help
Hey there, I remember when I first started planning my PC build a few years ago. The situation changed quickly after COVID hit, with high prices and supply issues making it tough to get everything. I put the project on pause for a while, but now I’m finally getting back into it. I’m still figuring out the best setup and wondering if some parts from 2020 are still worth keeping, like the CPU and motherboard I bought back then. I’m aiming for a mid-range build again, so any tips or suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!
You might want to look into the 5600X3D CPU. It seems storage is more important than speed unless prices match closely. That situation is okay but you could find a similar model at a lower cost. The Fractal Design Focus 2 is typically available for around 60 to 70 dollars, and the monitor you mentioned would also be a solid choice. However, you might need a better graphics card to handle it quickly and maintain high detail quality for some time (2-3 years).
Hey there,
I was thinking about what I should do next.
As before, upgrade the CPU. Your CPU sends pre-rendered frames to the GPU, and the quicker it does this, the higher your GPU's FPS will be.
The 5600x3d is a great choice for gaming. If you need a boost in other areas, a CPU with more cores like the 5700x might be better. Either way, before installing a new CPU, make sure to update the BIOS first.
Keep using your current motherboard—it's quite reliable.
What RAM do you currently have? If you don’t have 3200/3600mhx, a faster CPU could help.
The power supply is still fine for now.
For the case, the Lian Li 216 is a solid option at the price point and offers good airflow.
Regarding the SSD, will it be the sole drive? If you plan that way, a fast enough boot drive (512gb to 1tb, like the 990 Pro) would be ideal, and then store your games on a separate drive such as the 970Pro 2 tb.
With direct storage becoming available for newer titles, the 990 Pro could be a good choice for your game drive, though you can swap it out if needed.
Edit: I’m currently looking for a new 1440p monitor. The LG model seems excellent. Slightly more expensive than others in that range, but I prefer quality over cost.
The top 5 gaming monitors at 1440p in 2026 include the ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27ACDNG, known for its premium OLED display and 360Hz refresh rate. www.rtings.com
Your strategy seems sensible.
It doesn't make much sense to alter what you already have.
the 5600X3D costs 230USD and is sold only at the microcenter store for in-store pickup. the 5800X3D is now priced at 320 USD, though it was previously discounted to 270 USD last week. You can choose based on your preference. I lean toward the 21:9 ultrawides; check nearby stores if you're interested.
