PC becomes unreliable following the switch to AM5 architecture and experiences crashes during gameplay.
Hello everyone, I recently upgraded my Ryzen 7 2700 to the AM5 platform with a Ryzen 7 7700X. The system has been unstable ever since. Initially, I purchased a Ryzen 9 7900X3D and an ASUS TUF B650 PLUS. EXPO worked but would crash after five minutes. On JEDEC, games frequently failed due to "ACCESS VIOLATION". When using just one RAM stick on JEDEC, the issue appeared sporadically but didn't resolve. After learning about the ASUS TUF B650 BIOS issues, I returned it. I also sent back the Ryzen 9 because its performance was unsatisfactory and to rule out a possible problem. Then I installed my current motherboard (MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI) and reused the RAM from the TUF B650-PLUS, which is also available on the Tomahawks QVL. The system boots at 6000mHz CL-36 EXPO settings, but it remains unstable. At least the "ACCESS VIOLATION" crashes have been eliminated. Symptoms observed: 1. My mouse occasionally stutters during movement. 2. My audio quality is poor. 3. The PC crashes without a blue screen or similar warning. It simply restarts and then restarts again, sometimes stopping completely. 4. A distinct noise comes from the motherboard/CPU. FPS drops significantly (144 to 15) whenever this noise occurs, especially around the tenth second of a recording on 4.Apr.19.29.aac. I ran AIDA64 Extreme (MSI edition) and my system survived a stress test for 30 minutes, but it shut down afterward. I also performed MemTest86 under EXPO settings (despite showing JEDEC config in the tool), which passed all tests. Cinebench at EXPO settings also completed successfully twice. Even compressing my Cyberpunk2077 folder to a 7zip archive for RAM and CPU testing worked without issues. However, when stress testing the noise, none of these tests failed. But once games are played, the above symptoms intensify. 3. My PC crashes after about ten minutes on average, sometimes even in the menu. Currently, I run my PC at JEDEC settings (4800mHz CL-40). Still, the symptoms persist. On JEDEC, I experienced only weak performance issues. Even with Cinebench for 30 minutes without crashes, Windows memory test passed, MemTest86 succeeded four times, and GPU stress testing completed without problems. In gaming, crashes are rare now, but significant FPS drops and symptom two/four frequently occur. Some actions I took: 1. Reinstalled Windows 10 multiple times—no changes detected. 2. Updated BIOS versions, chipset drivers, etc.—no changes. 3. Reseated CPU and RAM several times—still no improvement. 4. Used only one RAM stick—unchanged. I haven’t manually overclocked the CPU or GPU. I suspect the noise (symptom four) isn’t the main issue, as both the motherboard and PSU are only three months old and performed well on my AM4 system. It might be a coincidence. I purchased new RAM for testing but don’t have it yet. My guesses point to a defective motherboard, faulty CPU, or bad RAM. Please share any experiences you’ve had or clues about which component might be faulty. Have you attempted to execute a Prime95 small FFT test across all cores? Test it for a minimum of an hour and observe if any cores trigger an error. This could signal a faulty CPU.
Thank you for pointing out Prime95. I wasn’t aware of this tool. I tested it for two hours without any errors or warnings. The CPU maintained a stable speed of around 4.9 to 5.0GHz while operating at 95°C.
The issue was with the CPU. It could have been due to a faulty chip or damage from the ASUS SoC-Voltage components. After replacing the CPU, everything works properly now.
