PC automatically resumes sleep after being awakened, keyboard and mouse fail to restart it.
Hello, thank you for sharing your details. I'm here to offer guidance on both concerns you've raised, beyond what you've already tried. I wasn't certain about the best way to start this discussion, but it seems more fitting to focus on this matter under PSU since it appears connected to power issues.
My PC specifications are as follows:
- MSI Gaming Desktop / Aegis RS 13NUF-439US / Intel Core i7 13th Gen 13700KF (3.40GHz)
- Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI -
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-Z790-P-WIFI
- RAM: 32GB DDR5 / ADATA XPG GAMMIX D10 32GB (4x8GB) DDR5 4800Mhz CL40 1.1V AX5U4800C408G-BB10
- 2 TB PCIe SSD / 3 TB HDD
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti
- Windows 11 Home or Pro 64-bit
- CORSAIR RMX Series™ RM850x 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
My situation is this: I recently purchased a brand new prebuilt desktop and replaced my previous "High Power 750W 80 Gold" PSU with the CORSAIR RMX Series™ RM850x 80 Plus Gold. After turning it on, everything seemed normal. However, I suspect the power supply might be functioning correctly, but I wanted to bring this to your attention.
Currently, all systems operate smoothly except for two main problems:
1. I cannot activate my desktop using the mouse and keyboard, even though they are connected to the correct USB ports (2.0 / 3.0). The issue isn't with the peripherals.
2. While the PC is in sleep mode, it occasionally wakes up on its own after a short delay—about 5 seconds before returning to sleep. The monitor doesn’t react quickly enough; it appears the tower wakes up and then pauses for 3-5 seconds before going back to sleep. Over an 8-hour test period, I experienced this multiple times, with the PC waking up roughly every 2-3 hours while in sleep mode.
Since I can't wake the system using the mouse or keyboard, I would need to manually press the power button on the tower to start it up. This allows both the tower and monitor to activate properly, enabling normal usage.
I recall encountering similar issues with my older machine, where adjusting power settings or performing a registry fix resolved the problem. I also tried using the -lastwake command in PowerShell, but it didn’t provide any useful information—it only detected wake events without details.
I attempted several troubleshooting steps:
- Allowed keyboard and mouse to wake the PC (success)
- Enabled sleep mode in multimedia settings (success)
- Restored default power options (success)
- Ran Power Diagnostics via msdt.exe (restored default schemes)
- Executed power troubleshooter (restarted PC)
- Enabled Sleep in Power Options (restarted PC)
Despite these efforts, the recurring wake-up issue persists. I’m unsure why this happens, but it’s frustrating because I have no problems with peripherals or basic functionality. The monitor and mouse work perfectly, yet the system still wakes unexpectedly.
Could you offer any additional insights or suggestions? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
I've found the issue and resolved it, so sharing just in case anyone else faces the same problems with being unable to have your mice/keyboard wake computers up from sleep. Wish I had tried that earlier, but I mean that shouldn't be something anyone should be expected to be doing on a brand new out of box computer, especially if a person is not tech savvy.
It turned out that for whatever reason the last
3 options
u see on below screenshot were
disabled
in BIOS by default under "
Setup Wake Up Configuration
" on my Motherboard: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI that I repeat is a new pre-built computer that I shouldn't even be doing anything to as it all should've worked by default out of the box, especially the most basic and most commonly used practices of being able to simply wake your pc up from sleep using keyboard/mice....
So I had to set "
Resume by USB Device
" to
ENABLED
; set "
Resume From S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 Mouse
" to
ENABLED
; and set "
Resume From S3/S4/S5 By PS/2 Keyboard
" to
ANYKEY"
and I am now able to wake my tower up using mice & keybord normally. If in your case BIOS shows all is enabled as it should be and you are facing the same issue then do the basic troubleshooting i had to do in my original post above.
P.S As for PC waking up from sleep on its own i think I might have found what it was caused by as I found a Wake Source be "S4 Doze to Hibernate", so just now will need to investigate on that etc.
This is now resolved.
