You're new to PoE and looking for guidance on classes and builds, especially focusing on ranged magic classes.
Then I believe PoE isn't your thing. I'm not urging you to stick strictly to it. Just jump in and enjoy the process as you uncover details along the way. If you're serious about playing PoE, absorb all the information available. But if you prefer a more casual approach, dive right in without reading everything at once—just focus on what you already have. In truth, the challenge lies in the final stage, which is what most ARPGs emphasize. That’s usually where players see their true objectives. To survive that is key; anything else falls short. I disagree with those who think the endgame defines the experience. They seem to assume fun comes later. I’ll share some insights from my own journey. I played before, and I’m still in college (back then). Some claim the real challenge begins when difficulty spikes, which is why I haven’t reached the end yet. Still, I read a lot on forums—like how I left school because I kept scrolling through PoE discussions. That’s not a joke. Once you experience several losses and make progress, start planning your character seriously. Think about leveling up to 60+, exploring maps, or even picking up Atziri. That way, you’ll have options like the Scion, which offers great stats both physically and as a character. You can wield a dual-handed axe or hammer while being a powerful witch. While every character has similar potential at the end, your starting class mainly shapes the early stages (levels 1–40). After that, you can customize your build. At the toughest setting, Reflect appears—meaning you take damage equal to what you inflict on enemies. It’s meant to stop Glass Cannons from overwhelming everything. Damage is scaled, then partially reversed through resistance, so you’re protected but still vulnerable. Building a character for the endgame demands balance and strength, but it’s doable. Things have changed; now defenses like Energy Shield and Life are more evenly matched. Armor and Dodge are key—armor reduces damage exponentially, while dodge offers a consistent chance to avoid hits. Understanding these mechanics helps you make smarter choices. Chaos damage is another factor: it bypasses shields and hits your life directly, which can be risky for builds with low life stats. Some developers even used analogies like “Chaos Inoculation” to explain how to protect life. Remember, there’s no perfect formula—just practice, adapt, and learn from each attempt.
Thanks for the update! I know there’s a lot of info available, but it can be overwhelming. I’ve played D3 quite a bit and think it was simpler back then. Regarding respect—do I have to spend money or can I always get my points back? I’m still figuring that out too. Also, I appreciate how the skill progression works (like the leveling system).
@Vitalius highlights the key points. Many builds exist, but they’re mostly suggestions. This game feels distinct. Orbs can restore one skill point when used. Earning skills from side quests gives you roughly 68 at level 60. Completing side tasks adds 4-7 respec points, so 61 orbs are needed for full respec. That’s a lot of currency for a newcomer—probably not worth it. Just try again. If you improve with a group, you can reach level 60 in about 24 hours. It’s an interesting system, like Final Fantasy X’s Sphere Grid.
Vitalius launched a marauder with a strong start, progressing steadily through levels. Currently at 29, he's employing this build: http://pathofpoe.com/builds/view/maraude...-explosio/
This construction looks solid. I'm not entirely confident about the endgame, but it's ideal for giving you a taste of the game. Enjoy!
