The Australian market isn't favorable for Ryzens, but an i7 2600k might still be worth considering.

Actually, it runs much slower than a Ryzen 5 1400. It uses an outdated and failing socket, and it has many security vulnerabilities.

When purchasing second-hand, aim for a Ryzen 1600 or i5 8500 as the simplest acceptable option for 2020 models.

those processors are far beyond my budget, but I can get an i7 which is decent too—it's similar to the old Ryzen 5 when it was new.

It performs poorly compared to the 1400 version. It will significantly slow down processing of the 980 unit, causing major performance issues. The overall system will become highly unbalanced.
