Pair CPU with 9070 XT model
Hey everyone! I’m following up on my earlier discussion. Right now I’m using a Ryzen 5 5600X paired with an RX 9070 XT for gaming at 1440p. I’m holding off on moving to the AM5 socket because I think the small performance boost wouldn’t justify the nearly $1000 price jump for both the platform and CPU. Instead, I’m considering a CPU upgrade but sticking with the AM4 socket. My options are likely the R7 5700X3D or the R9 5900X. Since my workload includes a lot of engineering tasks—like PCB/CAD modeling in Fusion, SolidWorks, and Ansys simulations—I’m curious if these CPUs would be a good fit. They can be similar in price sometimes, but the R9 5900X usually costs about $50-100 more. What do you think? Would upgrading the CPU still make sense with the RX 9070 XT upgrade?
Have you checked how your performance is using resources? In titles like Civ, you're likely hitting CPU limits, but if you mainly play Doom Eternal you probably won't notice much improvement. For gaming alone, the 5900X wouldn't be a strong upgrade since it shares the same core and only slightly boosts speed. If you're experiencing a CPU issue in games, a 5700X3D would be the best choice. The situation becomes more complex when you also handle productivity tasks—we can't determine your exact needs without more details about your usage, project demands, and system strain. Ultimately, you should decide yourself if an upgrade is necessary and whether it's for gaming or work.
choosing a 5700x3d or even 5800x3d would be ideal if you're committed to using AM4, especially for gaming on an AM4 X3D CPU. Make sure you have fast RAM, like a Ryzen 1:1 ratio, since your 3900X with 3600MHz was perfect in that setup.
