Hey, I need some help setting up my PC so it runs smoother. I've never done this before and just bought this computer: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Punkyfi...iew=X8Hzf7 My younger brother is really upset because the game isn't running at a steady speed. He's been playing for a while and the FPS (frames per second) goes way up and down, mostly between 15 or below. I tried turning on "Extreme Gaming Mode" in Dragon Centre to fix it, but he bought a new item inside the game which dropped his frame rate back down to 15. He said my PC was actually better than that old setup with a Gigabyte Z390 board and an i7 9700k processor because the FPS stayed higher before. I am not very good at gaming, so could anyone please give me some advice on how to set things up better? I would really appreciate it! Thanks
Why are you doing this overclock? The system doesn't really need it because the graphics card is much lighter than the processor, so the game will get stuck until we upgrade that part significantly. I would just take it back to stock settings and check how it works on its own. Just set up the memory profile and see what happens. Go into Windows power options and turn them all the way to Maximum Performance while you figure things out, then switch back to Balanced later when you're done. How hot are your temperatures? Maybe the CPU is slowing down because of heat and that's why it feels slow. A stock cooler works fine for now, but I wouldn't risk a big overclock on one just yet. Also, make sure your monitor is plugged into the graphics card, not the motherboard. That's a common mistake when you're just starting out.
Why bother overclocking? The system doesn't really need it because the GPU is much lighter than the CPU, so games won't go fast until that gets upgraded a lot. I'd just revert to stock settings and check how things perform normally. Only set the XMP profile on the memory and see what happens there. Turn power options in Windows to Maximum Performance while figuring things out, then switch back to Balanced to save some battery life. How hot are these temperatures? The CPU might be getting too warm and slowing itself down instead of working fast. A good stock cooler is fine for now, but I won't trust a huge overclock with the original one. Also, make sure you plug your monitor directly into the GPU, not the motherboard—that's a common mistake for new builds. When it comes to overclocking, check this guide: https://www.overclockers.com/how-to-over...the-beast/ Same rules apply across generations, so this should work for the 10600k too.
Hardware components have built-in temperature limits. When they hit these limits, the processor or graphics card slows down its speed and uses less power. Sometimes it even shuts down or restarts itself just in time so the whole computer doesn't crash. This is fast enough today to keep things running smoothly without breaking.
