I am getting strange drops in my signal on just one computer at home. This PC is plugged directly into the wall, while my other computer uses a router and doesn't have this problem. I tried fixing it by changing the cable, unplugging and plugging it back in again, updating the software drivers, resetting power to all devices, adjusting speed limits, removing extra gadgets from the network, and even testing with just one device left at home. This PC has been working perfectly for years without any trouble. Now I see a constant 2% to 12% drop that rarely goes away completely. Sometimes the internet seems fine again for about ten minutes, but then everything comes back slow and glitchy. I know nothing about internet stuff, so please help me solve this problem.
You need to cut out the in-wall wiring because it's the main source of trouble. Run a long ethernet cable across the floor (and down the stairs) and plug your computer straight into the router. See if that makes things work better. If you don't want to use a long cable, then you'll have to move the PC closer to the router and test again.
