I recently switched from an i3 6100 (GTX 1060) to a Ryzen 5 1600 (GTX 1070) and I'm still getting used to how games use multiple cores and threads. Does the screenshot you mentioned look normal? I expect different titles to perform differently, but I think Overwatch doesn't take advantage of AMD's Hyperthreading like Intel does, or maybe it only uses six cores. Could be that MSI Afterburner is affecting the display, though it seems like Overwatch is showing cores 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12. At first I thought it might switch between real and virtual cores, but it seems to favor real ones toward the end. Anyone else notice similar patterns?
It seems the processor likely utilizes more than four cores, with developers suggesting six or more is ideal. While the exact core count isn't specified, it appears the system supports a high number of threads, possibly exceeding six. The Ryzen 5 model in question offers a substantial thread count beyond what’s typically seen.
It’s unclear exactly what normal behavior looks like for that game and system. Optimized titles usually try to bypass logical cores if physical cores are sufficient. I don’t notice a clear issue, so as long as Overwatch functions as intended, you should be okay.
I received an R5 1600, I plan to test it tomorrow and compare. It's time to rest, lol
You shared your observation about performance differences, noting higher spikes at 100% but lower overall usage across cores compared to someone else's setup. Your system is a non-overclocked R5 1600 with MSI Afterburner active only during gameplay. The numbers you mentioned seem to reflect your actual stats.
My 1600 is OCd to 3.8, though I suspect the difference in our configurations might stem from having a GTX 1070 while running Overwatch at the absolute lowest graphics settings. During play, my GPU usage hovers between 50-60%. I believe the game only utilizes my real cores since it doesn’t require virtual cores thanks to my low settings. If I increased the quality, I’d likely see all 12 threads being active. I feel I’ve addressed my own query now.
