I believe OWL represents a significant step forward for eSports, drawing inspiration from successful league structures like the NBA. It could boost visibility and attract more fans by mimicking profit-driven models. While it’s encouraging to see investment from Blizzard, the current absence of European representation is a drawback. This development might spark greater interest in the scene. What do you think about it? Which team do you support? Aces High
I believe OW isn't demanding much expertise when compared to games like CS:GO and LoL. Therefore, I doubt it will achieve the same level of popularity or generate as much revenue.
It's uncommon to encounter others with my exact views, but seeing Niko as your profile picture is interesting. Most games don't demand the same level of skill as CS:GO, which I also enjoy!
The issue is that if this fails, it could hurt e-sports more than help. It took two years to get everything ready, which means many top players left elsewhere. I think I should have supported ESL and other events to help them succeed. Honestly, making esports as successful as real sports requires a lot of positive aspects—being easy to watch, competitive, high skill level, and keeping cheaters in check. It’s important to keep the game interesting, and having a loot box system is either missing or similar to what Overwatch has. For watching games, ESL looks like the best free option so far, which makes it tough for others to compete. No game so far has managed all these requirements.
Balance requires excessive time (Hanzo's scatter), often results in poor quality (Junkrat/Mercy/Roadhog at times), and Blizzard doesn't engage enough with top players as they should. Beyond OWL fans, drawing pros remains challenging for games like Overwatch.
There are several advantages that didn't make it onto OWL because the lineups are already full. I think Twitch is the top choice for watching games, though ESL has signed a deal to stream on Facebook, which clearly has a bigger audience. Still, it seems tough to reach the right people. Unlike CSGO and LoL, which I also play, Overwatch focuses more on teamwork than solo talent. I understand your argument, but I think strong skills aren't always easy to spot, which might make it harder to draw viewers.
