I've experienced problems with frame rate, particularly in VR, and noticed my CPU often runs at high usage while the GPU stays low. With a Ryzen 5 2600X and an RTX 2070 Super, I thought the combination would handle 1440p well since others claim it isn't a major bottleneck. Should I invest more in a newer Ryzen 5000 series chip, or is there an issue with my settings? Also, the Oculus software consumes about 20% of resources when used, which isn't unusual.

Typically normal with 2 to 4 threads. Depending on the game and VR software, it can be CPU intensive. As long as you're not fully using the CPU, it should work fine. CPU limitation might occur slightly. It's not the most powerful CPU available, which is part of the issue...

Typically normal with 2 to 4 threads. Depending on the game and VR software, it can be CPU intensive. As long as you're not fully using the CPU, it should work fine. CPU limitation might occur slightly. It's not the most powerful CPU available, which is part of the issue...

Observe, the focus remains on core utilization rather than CPU load. A CPU-bound game with just one render thread shouldn't strain 100% CPU, especially in DX11 or higher threads. VR demands consistent 90 FPS, so single-core performance becomes noticeable. The 2600x resolution isn't inherently problematic. I haven't used VR software myself and don't have experience with most VR titles. Are there specific games you're asking about?

Typically, many titles perform well, but CPU-intensive games such as GTA and Red Dead Redemption 2 can drop below 60 FPS even on powerful cards with over 100 FPS capability

Additionally, keep in mind that I typically maintain around 20 FPS during challenging VR experiences, and occasionally encounter unexpected frame drops without any apparent cause.

You need to mention his quote while keeping it similar to what he did. The 2600x limits the 2070 super, only a slight reduction but around 10-20 fps versus a 3700x in most cases. Of course, some outliners can achieve higher speeds, though generally it’s not that great. In certain titles like Outer Worlds I’ve noticed lower frame rates, and others too. Keep in mind that if you have a Ryzen 5000 CPU, you’ll need to update your motherboard BIOS with a version that remains uncompatible after use—this can hurt its resale value. Still, overall it’s better than before. I’d say the Ryzen 5000 series will likely increase FPS more. I’m considering 3800xt or 5700x once they’re available, which might be around four months away. Personally, I’m a bit worried about my performance with the 2600x in games like Cyberpunk, where I really want to play. For me, the 3800xt should still work for a long time until I get DDR5 memory. For you, if this feels similar, you can follow suit. Or since you enjoy VR, the 5600x or 5800x would make a big difference. It might help a bit more. Of course, VR is tougher and dropping below 90 FPS will be frustrating. If you’re serious about playing as much VR, a better CPU will be beneficial. Just avoid going back to a 6-core setup—opt for an 8-core instead. In short, yes it does slow things down a bit. It will be even more noticeable with newer games.
