Hey everyone, I just purchased a new motherboard for my custom-built PC for my fiancé. I'm trying to figure out why it's getting such high temperatures. I've installed all the drivers from the manufacturer's site, but I haven't updated the BIOS yet. Could that be the reason behind the issue? The board model is MSI H81M-E33 with LGA 1150 socket.

This setup seems unusual for a gaming PC. There aren’t enough threads, memory isn’t sufficient and it runs slowly. The motherboard temperature seems particularly high. My reading of the 127°C socket temperature is concerning—it suggests a serious hardware issue. The CPU shouldn’t reach that level; it should slow down beforehand. If this happened, there’s likely a component failure. Since the CPU itself isn’t excessively hot, the problem probably lies with the motherboard. Updating the BIOS might help, though I’m not very confident yet. It might be worth testing another legacy board before replacing the hardware.

I checked the information and noticed the VRMs matter when overclocking the CPU. It might help to adjust the BIOS settings on the motherboard. I could also try updating the BIOS to see if that fixes the issue.

the board doesn't support overclocking, which isn't the main issue. It might just lack proper airflow, causing the VRM to overheat. Point a fan at the VRM heatsink.

If your board lacks sufficient cooling—whether from cooler selection or design—it’s possible improved VRM management could help. The BIOS might address an issue that lets things run cooler, though I remain skeptical. Some H-series boards offer basic overclocking features, but they often put stress on the motherboard. Using them now might be contributing to your overheating problem.

Just try pointing a fan at it to check if the sensor functions properly. It might be a faulty sensor.
