I'm using a Samsung 970 EVO Plus on an ASRock Phantom Gaming Z390 with an M.2_2 slot holding the SSD and a heat sink. The drive is in M.2_1, which has a cooler airflow from the back side of the motherboard. I've noticed it's getting hotter than the CPU most of the time, even when the CPU isn't running high. At 50°C, is that safe for the drive? And if so, what steps should I take? Should I spread thermal paste between the pad and the heat sink?

50C remains cool even when the SSD is under stress. If it heats up during idle, try increasing the GPU fan speed.

Some heat sinks don’t establish a solid connection with the drive, I think you either skip using it or replace the thermal pads. The M.2 SSD should work fine even without one.

SSDs are built to handle up to 70°C, that's okay. A bit of thermal paste can assist, especially if the current pads aren't present.

SSDs perform best in moderate heat. Low temperatures can damage them. If the microcontroller slows down due to heat, add a small heatsink—it protects the rest of the SSD from further issues.

The software you're encountering is probably not optimized for SSD use. Your motherboard comes with the same components, yet the CPU doesn't overheat the SSD. The cooler is mainly aimed at the chipset beneath it, which tends to get hot. You haven't installed the SSD mounting piece that enhances airflow. It's worth noting that many MMO suppliers include SSD heat sinks that can actually trap heat.

Relax, the speed will stay at 60 and throttling won’t be an issue. No need to worry about a 10°C drop causing delays—this won’t affect performance noticeably. There’s also limited evidence supporting the idea that low temperatures are harmful.

I receive the alert from Unraid, knowing the storage is an SSD. I’ll turn off the warning temporarily, and won’t fret unless temperatures increase. Thanks!
