I recently assembled my initial machine after weeks of anticipation using a Ryzen 5 3600. I became puzzled by its intense heat, ranging from 51°C to 59°C even when idle, and reaching the high 70s during light browser gaming (monitored via HWMonitor and AMD Ryzen Master). The ambient temperature averaged around 25°C with the stock cooler on. I’ve seen some forum discussions, but typical readings suggest around 40°C–45°C even with the stock cooler. I decided to reapply thermal paste (Coolermaster IC Value V1) thinking the old paste might have dried or that I’d made an installation error. After doing so, my temperatures dropped by only about 2°C to 3°C. Am I overlooking something? I intend to upgrade my cooling solution anyway, as 60°C on YouTube isn’t enough. Still, I’m curious what’s happening here. Full Specs: AMD Ryzen 5 3600, Asus TUF B450M-Plus Gaming Powercolor RX580 (secondhand), 4x4 GB at 2666 MHz, HyperX 60W, Corsair CV550 80+ Bronze, TeamGroup GX2 256 GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD, Trendsonic Styx case (similar to Chinese builds Linus used), plus six generic Chinese case fans (120 mm, three front intakes, one rear with two top exhausts).
Typical Ryzen 3rd generation performance tuning, no issues detected. When the CPU is idle, most cores shut down completely while a few operate at high speeds. This results in one core running hotter while others stay cooler—something you can clearly observe in Ryzen Master. Adjust the BIOS voltage from "ASUS optimized" to standard or CPU control settings, and turn off all ASUS features, aiming for stock AMD configurations. This should lower performance by about 10%.
The problem lies more in elevated heavy-load temperatures rather than high idle readings. The traditional view suggests a CPU should handle up to 75°C without wear, but I’m unsure why that number exists. It could relate to changes in the insulator material or simply reflect the company’s stance that performance degradation won’t affect warranty coverage. Frustrating. I’d appreciate more detailed data. Still, the chip hasn’t reached the 75°C mark yet. On a standard cooler, you often see idle temps above 85°C during heavy loads. So far we haven’t recorded any such figures from your side.
perfectly normal, and idle temps don't matter, load temps do. if they're fine then nothing to worry about.
