Overheating issue preventing system boot.
I just finished assembling my first PC build. When I tried to power it on the first time, nothing appeared on the screen, but the machine ran for about a minute or two before shutting down completely. I attempted to restart it since that seemed normal for a brand-new system. After turning it back on, it stayed on for roughly 30 seconds before powering off. The monitor remained inactive. Later, I removed the front panel and touched the CPU—its temperature was extremely high. I don’t have a cooler installed yet, but I’m convinced one would help prevent this issue. Parts used: Ryzen 7 5800X, M.2 SSD (AWS B550), X570 chipset, Corsair Vengeance 16GB, 3200MHz, Corsair CV650, and an ATA M.2 card. If anyone has suggestions on why it overheats and shuts down, please let me know. I know a cooler is essential for gaming performance, but I’ll get one eventually. Thanks!
The CPU cooler is essential even when using BIOS; without it, your system might overheat to around 100°C within roughly 43 seconds (based on testing with my older 3700X).
It heats up due to the high density of transistors and their rapid operation. With 4,150 million transistors running at 3.8Ghz, millions of them switch states every second, generating significant heat.
Thanks to both of you! I plan to purchase a CPU cooler. I already have an Intel socket cooler, but I wasn’t sure if it would fit an AMD MB series, and I thought I could reuse the old one.
A cooler is required to maintain BIOS operation beyond 30 seconds. Obtain one and try again.
Choose a cooler capable of managing high heat output, especially for AMD systems running at 105W. A standard stock cooler won’t suffice. Newer PC builders today have better options, thank you very much. I recall overheating an i5 2500K during setup when I forgot to connect the fan. After installing the cooler, I ran a memory test and saw the screen display corrupted data. The cooler became too hot only after about fifteen minutes, and the CPU remained warm even after removal. It never functioned properly afterward. Your Ryzen model probably handled it better, but avoid pushing temperatures this high to prevent long-term damage.
