Overheat warning: Ryzen 5 3600 reaches 50°C during idle and up to 80°C while gaming.
Hi everyone, I just set up my first Ryzen PC and am worried about its heat levels. It uses a Ryzen 5 3600 with a Corsair H100X AI cooler. My room is about 24°C, but the CPU hits 40-50°C when idle—Cinebench reaches 80-83°C but not higher. Since I’m coming from a 32nm Xeon that stayed under 60°C, I expected Ryzen to be cooler. The pressure in the mounting area seems high enough, and I re-applied thermal paste without success. My fan setup is decent—three intakes, four exhausts, plus the AI cooler acting as an exhaust. I swapped the stock AI fans for Arctic P12s, but still see these temps. Is this normal? Thanks for your help, Luis.
The temperatures look reasonable for a 5 3600 and are not unusually high. Regarding your Windows setup, the AMD Ryzen Balanced Plan is suggested as a good option.
AMD and Intel temperatures don<|pad|> a lot differ. The chip designs are entirely distinct, and the sensors aren't positioned alike. What counts is whether your readings match those of other 3600 users. From what I understand about Ryzen, idle temps between 40-50°C are completely typical.
Thanks for your response. It's surprising to hear those temperatures are normal, but I'm relieved it matches expectations so I won't need to upgrade. I don't have the chance to pick an AMD Ryzen Balanced Plan like others do. Do I really need to install any app for this? It's my first AMD CPU.
Weather looks good, but you might boost performance by repositioning the cooler. Ensure the backplate is fully seated. Apply sufficient thermal paste—about a small dot just beneath the Z on the Ryzen nameplate on the CPU. The area should match roughly a chickpea in size. Tighten securely. GG
Thanks for the reply! I'm not familiar with Ryzen's thermal patterns. It seems like the CPU temperature fluctuates a lot when apps start and stop, which can be confusing. I guess getting accustomed to that might take some time.
It seems there might be some confusion. I didn't actually check, but you brought up the backplate and the CPU block. You mentioned the brackets are already in place, so I'll assume you meant confirming that setup.
