Overclocking the GPU clears when launching a game.
Overclocking the GPU clears when launching a game.
I adjusted the overclock parameters in both the Radeon Configuration and MSI Afterburner. Testing with Furmark showed everything normal. The issue only appeared when running a game, after which the clocks reset back to defaults and I couldn't modify them until I restarted the system.
I can only recall three things at the moment. Perhaps others will think of more later.
1.) Overclock instability, which you only discover when loading the game. Each program reacts differently to the same overclock setting.
2.) Saved profiles clashing between Afterburner and Crimson. Conflicts can occur even without Afterburner running. Try removing all overclocking tools, clearing any temporary files, and check again. I had to remove Afterburner to resolve a crashing system after experimenting with it.
3.) Power supply failure, which might go unnoticed until you stress the system, such as playing a game.
Before we continue, max out that power control/limit slider. There is never a reason not to unless you're using a laptop or your card is overheating.
That's a pretty decent overclock you got going there for an HD7950. I wonder, what are your temps like?
Crimson and Afterburner, currently, act like spoiled, pouty, tantrum-y schoolboys when they are run concurrently. If you're going to set an overclock, I would dial it into Crimson only, and make sure it's in the global settings (and saved, of course) instead of relying on Afterburner. I've had far better luck with ASUS GPUtweak, Sapphire Trixxx, and Radeon Pro (the brute force method, I call it).
Edit: I just had a play with Afterburner, and it crashed my computer. Derp.

I maxed out the power control in radeon settings and the same issue accrued. I downloaded Radeon Pro, but all overclocking options are grayed even when I click on the unlock button. I tried ASUS gpu tweak and the same issue happens. Its so odd. It only happens once I launch the game.
I have only three ideas at the moment. Perhaps more will appear later.
1.) Unstable overclock settings, which aren't obvious until you start the game. Each program reacts differently to the same overclock adjustment.
2.) Overlapping saved profiles in Afterburner and Crimson. Conflicts can occur even without Afterburner running. Try removing all overclocking tools, clearing any temporary files, and check if the issue persists. I had to remove Afterburner to resolve a crashing system after experimenting with it.
3.) Failing power supply, which might go unnoticed until you put a heavy load on the system, such as running a game.
