Since most users won’t adopt AVX applications, the games they do play using AVX will be much less demanding than even the standard AVX set in Prime, let alone AVX 2 or 512. You must ensure thermal compliance first—start with no AVX. Only when you’re certain to use AVX-based programs that are more intensive can you adjust the settings by running more Prime95 instances with the right AVX configuration and BIOS offset. Discover the optimal balance, as there are excellent guides available for those who need precise tuning.
Sorry I seemed a bit rude, I was tired. I'm used to overclocking nehalem and westmere / bloomfield since they're pre-AVX, so I don't have to worry about that. These guides are really helpful for modern CPU overclocking. I mostly use older methods and rarely focus on multiplier only builds. I usually run AIDA64 for 15 minutes and then Cinebench; if it runs smoothly, I play games for an hour or two. If I don't see any blue screens, I do an Intel burn test with 90% memory usage for a night, and if that succeeds, the next day I try Prime95 blend. That's about how it works. After delidding (just nehalem xeon, others soldered, 1366 always soldered in HIPS), I stay below 85°C even at 1.5V Vcore. This is with a few of these units from H150i Corsair.
