Overclocking Ryzen 5 1600
Overclocking Ryzen 5 1600
I have the AMD components for my PC build I’m looking to purchase for Black Friday.
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor
Motherboard: MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard
I’m curious if using just the stock CPU cooler could harm my CPU or other parts during overclocking. I’ve heard that adding 16GB RAM might assist with overclocking, and I’m new to this process. Should I ever consider overclocking and would I need a new cooler? Also, with Black Friday approaching, should I upgrade any of my components for better value?

I’ve noticed some people use multiple SSDs—do you think it’s worth it?
Would you recommend sticking with the AMD series or switching to an Intel i7 8th gen CPU, installing a custom cooler, and replacing the motherboard?
The build is overall solid, but the PSU and 650W+ power supply are the main points of concern. The GTX 1080 seems unnecessary; would you really need it? Your monitor choice is unclear—this setup is more than sufficient for 1080p or 2K gaming. The 250GB SSD works well, but you could upgrade if you have extra funds. Handling the PCIe lanes carefully won’t harm components. Avoiding a 1.5v CPU boost will keep things safe. The Coffee Lake I7 model would be pricier because of the $400 CPU and limited Z370 MB options. I wouldn’t consider it right now.
I have some monitors left in my garage, but I don’t know their specifications. I’m using the GTX 1080 mainly because I want better FPS in my games. If I stayed on the Ryzen 5 1600, would I need a custom CPU cooler to overclock it? Should I consider switching to a GTX 1070 or even a 1060 for more SSD storage? Also, someone suggested I might not need a 620W PSU and that a 550W unit is sufficient.
1600 includes a solid cooler, making extra cooling unnecessary. Your current display should be 1080p at 60Hz, even with high frame rates, and it won’t feel sluggish. What’s your overall budget looking like? Are you aiming for 2k performance or is 1080p sufficient?
I just discovered that the "monitor" in my garage is actually a fake, and it's a real HP TouchSmart PC... thanks mum :/
Monitor
I’m looking for a monitor that complements my 'Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1080 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card'. I’d like something with a 144hz, 2560x1440 resolution and a 1ms response time. I’ve heard G-Sync is beneficial, but I wasn’t sure if that was correct.
GPU
If I can’t afford a new monitor at a very high cost, would it be wise to downgrade my GTX 1080 to a 1070 or a 1060?
CPU
I already own the AMD Ryzen series and don’t need a cooler since the built-in one works fine. Even though it’s low-end, it doesn’t change my thoughts—if I could, I’d switch to an Intel model. I found a good deal on Amazon for the i7-7700k at just £281?

It seems tempting, but the i7 8th generation is only about £100 more. If it’s worth it, I’m prepared to spend that extra amount. Many people say the Ryzen series is cheaper, but they might be right—opting for Intel would make sense.
PLEASE NOTE I PLAN TO PURCHASE ALL THESE ITEMS ON BLACK FRIDAY AND CYBER MONDAY
