Dealer of Aces:
From what I understand, Asus permits overclocking on the h97 plus motherboard. The automatic overclock functions properly, reaching up to 4.5 ghz with a core voltage of 1.276 in cpu-z. However, when I try to manually adjust the settings, my system fails to boot or triggers a BSOD. I’m seeking some assistance to identify where I might be going wrong. Thanks!
I’m using the 4790K and the Asus H97 PLUS. Despite reviewing the BIOS thoroughly, I still can’t achieve overclocking. (I have the most recent BIOS, but no update.)
I believe the problem lies with the Haswell Refresh being in an uncertain overclock status—earlier Haswell models were more likely to be supported for OC.
I’m fine with the 4790K at its stock speed. My priority is increasing its clock speed slightly. I purchased 1866MHz Kingston Hyper X RAM, which they claim supports overclocking. I’d prefer to run it at 1866MHz or even higher, such as 2100MHz, since the board caps it at 1600MHz. Unfortunately, unlocking XMP isn’t possible.
If I could reach 1866MHz or faster, my PC would last longer. Currently, I’m considering a Coffee Lake build instead, though I was hoping to wait for a Cannon Lake release. However, many of my games still struggle at 1440p resolution. It seems the motherboard or RAM might be limiting performance.
My CPU is only at 23% and my GPU at 67%, yet my frame rate drops to 81 fps in this capture. Some titles are dropping below 60fps, which is the main concern. I aim for around 100 fps.

I remember the only method to achieve my 4790K OC was by setting all four cores to 4.4GHz. It worked. ... Well, I moved on and now have an 8700K.
