Overclocking my fx 4100
Overclocking my fx 4100
Hello! I'm looking into how much I can safely overclock my FX 4100 to 3.6 Ghz. I have a stock cooler, and I need guidance on the limits.
Initially, FX stock coolers struggle with their clock speeds and voltages. Switching to a quality CPU cooler is advised; a 120mm or 240mm rad would be suitable for overclocking beyond 4.8Ghz. It's also important to consider the motherboard you're using—ensure it's capable before attempting overclocking. With proper cooling and a good VRM motherboard, FX chips can typically reach 4.8Ghz to 5Ghz without major issues. For voltage, stick to 1.55V for continuous overclocking; FX chips can handle up to 1.6V, but heat management becomes critical. When overclocking, incrementally increase the multiplier—start with 18 for a 3.7Ghz setting—and run Prime95 for an hour without errors.
Initially, FX stock coolers struggle with their clock and voltage requirements. Switching to a quality CPU cooler would be wise—consider a 120mm or 240mm rad if you plan to push the processor beyond 4.8Ghz. It's also important to check the motherboard you're using; a solid one is essential before attempting overclocking. With FX, provided adequate cooling and a robust VRM, they typically handle 4.8Ghz to 5Ghz without major issues. For voltage, it's best to stay below 1.55V for continuous overclocking, though FX chips can usually manage up to 1.6V, but heat generation becomes a concern.
To increase performance, gradually boost the multiplier by one at a time. The stock setting should be around 18 for your chip. Adjust it to 18.5 (3.7Ghz) and run Prime95 for an hour without errors to verify stability. If stable, proceed; otherwise, raise the CPU core voltage by 125mV (0.0125V) and retry. Keep monitoring temperatures and voltages during testing. Using tools like HWInfo is recommended, aiming for CPU temperatures under 62°C for safety, though 65°C or less is still acceptable.
Keep in mind, avoid using the stock cooler during overclocking. High-quality CPU coolers are now affordable and effective.
