Overclocking i9 9900K processor
Hi there, I've been checking online for tips on overclocking my I9 9900K. A few days back a friend shared he reduced his overclock due to heat problems. I've been looking up details but haven't found a clear guide. My friend cut his speed from 4.9Ghz down to 4.6Ghz, while others around him are at 4.6Ghz. Both of us have custom watercooled builds. Mine is clocking 5.1Ghz and I'm using an air cooler (NH-D15). Under stress tests like Cinebench R20 it reaches 80°C to 85°C, but during normal use it stays around 65°C. I've noticed that with AVX enabled, temperatures stay lower. From what I see, water cooling should let the CPU run cooler than an air cooler. I'm also seeing binned CPUs advertised with overclocks from 4.6Ghz to 4.8Ghz. I'm wondering if I'm pushing it too hard or if my setup is just naturally efficient.
Boost performance to 5 GHZ on two cores and 4.7 GHZ across all cores. If they’re running at 4.6, they’re likely slowing them down. Why buy a 9900k to slow it down? As long as it stays under ~75°C for regular use, it’s okay. I’m unlikely to see it run that fast normally. My system hits mid-50s to low-60s in games, and AIDA64 can push FPU speeds into the high 80s. More details would help. Currently, stock clocks at 4.7 GHz are fine. You shouldn’t exceed about 1.35V for daily use. What voltages are they actually using? Also, with 9900Ks becoming available, high-clock versions are rare. My unit handles 4.9 GHz well, but cooling is an issue—temperatures hit around 100°C during stress tests. If you’re using R20 to check overclock stability, it probably won’t hold up long enough. I’d run AIDA64 FPU for hours, usually more than eight.
I'm just starting to experiment with overclocking, not very familiar with the process. My 9900K was in use for about ten months before I began researching and testing different configurations. The benchmarks my friends are using are hard to recall, so I’m trying to understand them better. I’m curious about their performance now and wondering if I should have known better. LOL I’ve run several stress tests and benchmarks since then, but I can’t remember all of them. I plan to try AIDA64 FPU to see how it performs. With my current settings, I haven’t seen any crashes during testing or regular use. I’m running at 5.1Ghz across all cores with a voltage of 1.295V.
