my GPU is an MSI Geforce GTX 1050 ti and I'm looking to improve its performance. If someone could suggest suitable overclocking settings, that would be really helpful. i'm using MSI Afterburner but I'm not very tech-savvy. thanks.

In this case I would choose an X99 chip for additional lanes regardless.

I'm not sure about the best setting for your chip... Since they vary a lot, I'd stick to the standard OC process and gradually increase the clock speed, then adjust memory speed until it stops progressing, after which lower it slightly. If temperatures remain stable, increase voltage and repeat the steps until you're happy or reach the card's maximum. Personally, with my hardware I enjoy testing performance first, then try a medium overclock to see how long it lasts...
