Hello everyone, this week I purchased a new PC for my home NAS and streaming server. The details are: RAM: ASROCK B550M Pro4, CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100, 2x HyperX 8GB DDR4 3200 MHz, GPU: FURY (HX432C16FB3), SSD: Patriot Burst 480 GB, ZFS cache: HP EX900 250 GB, GPU RAIDz1: 4x Seagate IronWolf 6TB. I also have an OCZ ZS Series PSU delivering about 650W. I plan to run OpenMediaVault with ZFS storage pool, Plex, and Nextcloud servers, plus some VMs and containers. When idle, it draws around 85W, which is quite high. I’m wondering what BIOS settings or other adjustments can help reduce power consumption? Thanks!

The 3100 doesn't reach 85W under full load, let alone when idle. Something is wrong with your setup. Try Ryzen Master or HWiNFO for better insight.

I've used a method to lower the chip's output to 85w while keeping it at 65w.

I believe the full system draws 85 watts. Adjust the power limit for everything to low, and you can even undervolt. Since we don't know the optimal undervolt for your CPU, every CPU has different capabilities.

Suggest setting up the system and then reducing power. We can't be sure this is the right approach.

The main choices are downclocking, minimizing the number of hard drives and fans, and setting up cron jobs to automatically power off the PC at specific times. You can also integrate home automation systems to control the PC remotely via a mobile phone. That’s roughly all you can do for saving energy.

JayzTwoCents shared a video from last night discussing the overclocking of the newest Ryzen XT CPU, claiming it's unnecessary for everyday use since the chip can manage it on its own. He suggested that even basic components like PBO are sufficient.

I believe the outdated GPU is responsible for most of the power consumption (as seen in the power outlet). I plan to install the operating system, configure these power limits (hoping they appear in the BIOS), and disconnect the GPU. I'll check the results then.

Typically a -0.1V adjustment to the core voltage is effective, but I favor a thorough stress test. Reducing power limits without undervolting will lower performance as well as energy consumption.
