Overclocking Asrock P55M Pro
Overclocking Asrock P55M Pro
Hello! Over the past few weeks I've been experimenting with boosting my old desktop's performance by adjusting BIOS settings. I'm trying to understand what overclocking a CPU can achieve and whether it really makes a difference. As a beginner, I find it tough to locate exact guidance for my specific hardware. This post is meant to share my queries and I'd really appreciate any advice you can offer.
My setup:
- Motherboard: Asrock P55M Pro
- CPU: i5-750 (Cooler: Snowman MT-4)
- Graphics: Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 2GB @ 1600MHz (x4)
- SSD: Samsung 860 EVO
Questions:
1) Asrock offers several auto-overclock options like CPU EZ OC, Memory EZ OC, GPU EZ OC and a full system turbo called Turbo 50. Are these tools effective? I've used Turbo 50 with a 40% boost option and saw only modest gains in Cinebench. My game scores improved but not as much as expected. After a few weeks I experienced some blue screens, then returned to normal speeds. Was this random? Is auto-overclocking a safe choice?
2) I attempted manual overclocking by adjusting the base clock from 133 to 180, multiplier to 20, and raising voltage slightly (+0.1). I kept other settings unchanged. Should I tweak any more parameters? Should RAM speed be adjusted? Are IDG and QPI configurations important? What about voltage settings like DRAM, VTT, PCH, PLL?
3) Can a CPU maintain the same speed across different base clock and multiplier settings? For example, is 100MHz x20 equivalent to 200MHz x10?
4) Occasionally my CPU speed fluctuates wildly between locked and variable ranges. Why does this happen? One time it jumped from 800MHz to 3800MHz repeatedly, then stabilized at 3800MHz with no changes. With identical multiplier settings, should I prefer a variable or fixed speed?
5) I value stability and reliability. After ten years of use, I'm comfortable with my system. I'm okay overclocking now since I'll eventually need an upgrade. But if I ever get a new machine, should I still overclock it? Is it safe to push performance this hard? Thank you for your help! Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
