I just purchased an i7-6700k and plan to overclock, which is something I've never done before. I'm wondering if the standard cooler for a non-K i7-6700 would be enough when overclocked. I don't intend to push it too high. Also, what's the safest method for overclocking with my basic motherboard (MSI H110 Pro DDR)?

Sadly, you'll require a z170 or z270 board to achieve that CPU overclock. Intel's capable motherboards for this purpose begin with a "z". On the positive side, your i7-6700k runs at 600 MHz more than the i7-6700.
