Hello everyone, I'm totally new to this and don't even know how to overclock.
I'm trying to boost my FX 8370's performance for gaming. Some titles run smoothly, while others (even with a GTX 1070) struggle to hit 60 FPS and I hope to get more than that. I think the CPU might be the issue.
Temperatures shouldn't be too much of a concern—I have a Gammax 300 cooler and according to HWMonitor, I'm between 19-25°C when idle and 38-42°C during max gaming. (I tested it in Dying Light, Overwatch, Fallout 4.)
It's strange because in Overwatch I can get up to 160 FPS with epic settings, but in Dying Light there are moments where I drop to around 54 FPS...
What's the best and simplest way to overclock? How much should I push it?
How far can I go before things get too hot?
Thanks!
Specs:
CPU: AMD-FX 8370 at 4GHz
CPU Cooler: Gammax 300
Motherboard: AM3+ - AMD 760G - GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 4.1)
RAM: 16GB (two 8GB cards)
HDD/Monitor: 1TB HDD at 144Hz, Acer Monitor
GPU: KFA2 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070
PSU: 600W power supply
~ Using Ethernet cable for internet

Overclocking isn't worth it. It's unlikely the motherboard will handle the 8370, and the stock configuration won't cope well with the weak VRM, making it a poor match for a 125w CPU.

I own an FX-8370 which normally runs at 4.1GHZ. When I enable AMD Overdrive, I can adjust the multiplier to 21x to reach 4.3GHz, but I’m unable to go higher. Even at that speed my temperatures remain very low, so I’d like to overclock further. However, Overdrive doesn’t allow it. Can I increase the speed using the BIOS?

I concur with bignastyid, as the motherboard can barely manage a 125tdp CPU even in stock configurations, let alone with an overclock.

I share the same view as bignastyid, a 125tdp cpu will struggle even at stock speeds, let alone with overclocking.
Right now I'm running a 4.3GHz overclock and my motherboard works just fine. (Stock is 4.02Ghz)
Temperature-wise, I'm at 25°C when idle with 4.3GHz and 39°C during max gaming.

I doubt those VRMs are functioning properly, particularly because of the lack of airflow from the tower cooler. Are you checking the CPU frequency to confirm it's dropping to around 1.4Ghz? Your current approach seems to be leading toward a failure.

I think those VRMs might be struggling, especially with the lack of airflow from the tower cooler. Have you checked the CPU frequency to see if it's dropping to around 1.4Ghz? What you're doing right now could lead to failure.
